My 2000 4x2 Gator is having brake problems. When in neutral I can not push it forward or back as the brakes are engaged. When in gear it will move but when the gas is let up it will stop within in a few feet. I have been told to adjust the brakes or to replace the brakes at a cost of $1800.00 which seems excessively high. Is there a way to adjust the brake tension or do they need to be replaced.

One of your tension springs is probably broken and letting the brake arm move forward and engage the brakes. There are tension springs holding the brake arms to the rear on both sides. They are hooked in slots in the turned up portion of the center frame ( other end hooked to brake arm). If you release those springs, with the emergency brake off, there should be between 1/16 and 1/8 inch travel front to back on the brake arm system. Pivot the brake arm coming out of the transaxle forward then backward and calculate the distance moved on the threaded brake adjusting rod. If over 1/8 inch loosen lock nut and tighten regular nut to achieve desired clearance.Replace springs. ....
